The pharmacy college, founded in 1864, had set its previous enrollment record of 1,190 in August 2008.

The current 1,218 students represent several countries and 35 states. Twenty states are represented by this year’s 234 first-year students, with 46 percent from Missouri and 39 percent from Illinois.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy said that, similar to last year, it is near capacity.

A shortfall of 29,000 pharmacists is predicted by 2020, according to the most recent report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

John Pieper reported Aug. 1 as St. Louis College of Pharmacy’s new president, replacing Thomas Patton, who stepped down after 16 years and is now president emeritus.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy is the 12th largest doctor of pharmacy program in the U.S. The college says that more than 72 percent of practicing pharmacists in the St. Louis metropolitan area are alumni of the school.
