Neuroscientists at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) have developed a protein peptide that may be a novel type of highly targeted treatment for depression with a low side-effect profile. Depression affects one in ten Canadians at some time in their lives and is a leading cause of disability worldwide.

The study published in this month’s Nature Medicine found that coupling between two dopamine receptors was significantly elevated in the brains of people who had been diagnosed with major depression. “We identified a potential therapeutic target for development of novel anti-depressants.” said Dr. Fang Liu, Principal Investigator and Senior Scientist in CAMH’s Neuroscience Program and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. With 6630 people newly diagnosed in 2009, this is the fourth year in a row in which the UK has seen a fall in the number diagnosed with HIV, the Health Protection Agency announced today. However the decline has been driven by falls in the number of people who acquired their infection abroad, whereas diagnoses of gay men and other people who acquired HIV in the UK remain stubbornly high.

Moreover the HPA say that there has been no decline in the number of undiagnosed infections over the past decade.

The Yes side in the Proposition 203 medical marijuana only trails by 1,457 votes as the vote tabulations head into their final day. That’s the closest the measure has been to passing. Vote totals could be finalized tomorrow but Prop. 203 is close enough to have a recount.

There are 815,953 votes against legalizing medical marijuana and 814,496 votes in favor.
